South Padre Island Marina

A prominent gateway to the community.

Edgewater developed a feasibility analysis for a new deep-water marina to expand public access and support transient boating and fishing. This effort included a physical analysis of navigability, habitat and aquatic vegetation, currents and sedimentation, visibility and access, and storm surge of sites throughout the island. The Master Plan incorporated offshore segmented breakwaters to provide aquatic and avian habitats, minimize impacts on seagrass and mangroves, and provide shoreline and flood protection. Edgewater performed numerical modeling, considering wave agitation, tidal current patterns, and expected sedimentation response to the breakwater island system. This modeling helped formulate the required shapes and locations of islands so that waves and tidal currents could be redirected or changed to achieve various goals, including enhancing the entrance to be self-scouring, forming water pockets to promote seagrass growth, and achieving basin tranquility, even under hurricane events. A regional market analysis was performed to document existing demand, slip availability, current market rates, and estimate the proper capacity of the new facility.
